I set out one evening trying to enter some new information into my genealogy program, when I had forgotten what the middle name of my great-great-grandfather was. I quickly typed his name into Google to get to his FindAGrave page faster (to get his middle name). What I then noticed was that there was a man by the name of Reverend William C. Deitzler (my ancestor) that had a published book being sold on Amazon. I clicked on the link out of curiosity and sure enough it was Reverend Deitzler's book.
I immediately purchased the book and waited for the package to arrive. When it finally did, I couldn't wait to read it. No one in my family even knew that the Reverend had written a book. In the back of the book were some testimonials, mostly from the Reverend's family. The one I found particularly interesting was one by his wife, Elizabeth. She spoke of her troubles with her eyesight, and that after the 1920s, she no longer needed glasses.
This information then caused my to dig up an old photo of Elizabeth holding a small child. It was a photo my grandmother had given to me, which seemed particularly special to her but I only put everything together once I had read the book. In the photo, Elizabeth was wearing glasses, meaning the latest it could have been taken was in the 1920s. My grandmother, who was very close with Elizabeth, was born in 1927. I finally realized the reason this photo was so special to my grandmother was because the photo was of herself and her grandmother, the only picture that exists of the two of them together. Elizabeth passed when my grandmother was still fairly young so she didn't have too many memories with her, and only had one other photo of Elizabeth.
It is amazing the discoveries that were made by simply searching my great-great-grandfather's name on Google.
That's all for this time.
